Apps for Days

Self-care is hard, and for many of us, phone apps make it easier. Here are a few that I am trying now...

First up is Finch, advertised as being "Your new self care best friend." Think, Tamagotchi that survives on your practicing mindfulness and setting/achieving small daily goals. It will keep asking you to register for the full experience, but I'm good with the free version (thank you very much, pushy bird). Through Finch, you can track daily personal goals such as showering, making your bed, washing your face, drinking water, etc. You are also able to answer short writing prompts including an afternoon reflection (today's is "What made you happy today?"), or responding to suggested prompts such as, "What are you trying to say through your clothes?" The app also offers comforting rain and other soundscapes for meditation or relaxation. He is available on IOS and GooglePlay.

Another adorable animal for mental health care is brought to you by Bearable. Naturally, this little bear is also a pusher for the full version, but again, no thank you. Bearable is great for mood and symptom tracking. Daily, you can rate your mood, symptoms, sleep, energy levels, meds/supplements, nutrition, health measurements, and even bowel movements. At the end of each week you're able to view a summary of your tracking, making this app especially ideal for anyone with emotional dysregulation, bipolar disorder, PMDD, or going through medication changes. Also available on IOS and GooglePlay.

Sincerely - Off My Chest connects you with others anonymously. The app is described on its site as "a safe place to share your secrets, questions, struggles, deep thoughts, emotions, and untold stories. Write them down in anonymous letters and others will respond! You will also receive 3 letters every night. Read their stories and respond to help them out."

No information is needed on your part. Your "letter" is sent to others around the world who can react or respond and you are given the same opportunity for others. It's been a special addition to my nightly routine. It is supposedly only available through the IOS store, however some online finagling will get Android users access as well.

Back to the idea of the Tamagatchi survive-by-mindfulness, VoidPet allows you to adopt emotions that require you to do a little self-reflection. You can grow, nurture, and let go of emotions that come to visit your little forest. Each log in, you will rate your current mood and be asked to set a goal, meditate, or name your emotions to earn voidmatter, which can then be used to buy food, outfits, or level-ups for your emotional little pets. Available for IOS and on GooglePlay, but also a full-scale game in beta available online at Voidpet.com
